Poetry

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

-WB Yeats

YES funded poetry is managed by lead poetry teacher Matt Davis, Ph.D. who, with Elizabeth Miller, teaches eight weekly forty-five-minute sessions in grades 2 through 8.

The focus of the poetry program is to develop innovative lessons that encourage student engagement; participation in enriching, thoughtful, vibrant learning experiences; opportunities for creative expression; and communication of thought and ideas in both “traditional” and non-traditional ways.

In addition the poetry classes are designed to create ever greater self-awareness; appreciation for diverse perspectives; opportunities for students to express their questions, reflections and inspirations; and facility with the process of feedback and revision. Partnering with classroom teachers, the developmentally appropriate lessons are also designed to reflect Common Core and curricular standards and goals.

Due to budget constraints, YES Poetry is not offered during the fall semester.
